Located 2 miles South of Newark in neighbouring Nottinghamshire, about half a mile South-West of the village where it takes it's name from, lies the remains of former RAF Balderton.
The airfield was open between 1941-1945 and today very, very few traces of the old airfield can be found. The A1 now cuts through the East of the old site, seperating the flying field from the old tech site. The old main entrance to the East of the site can still be made out South of the farm on the A6065 (which originally part of the A1 before it was realigned in the 60's) and one old hut still remains nearby, but the remaining buildings have long been demolished and the site returned to farmland.
The outlines of the old peri-track and parts of the runways on the flying field, now West of the A1, can just about be made out from the air, however there is virtually nothing at ground level to indicate the areas former use. North-West of the site has been heavily excavated by a quarrying firm, and the South East reverted to agriculture apart from a few traces of track and one old pill box on the South of the airfield.
The former Balderton Hospital, which lies opposite the A6065 to the North of the site, was taken over as officers quarters for the duration of the war. However, this too has since been redeveloped into an old folks home and all outer buildings demolished to make way for a housing estate. |
