RAF Woodhall can be found 2 miles South of Woodhall Spa village, alongside the B1192 road. The site originally opened in 1942 as a bomber airfield, but was redeveloped into a Bloodhound missile base in 1957. The base was wound down in 1965 after these missiles were taken out of service, though part of the old site was retained by the RAF as an engine testing facility for nearby Coningsby, which utilises the hangers and buildings on the Western part of the site near the road.
However, the main tech site to the South was demolished sometime after the flying field’s closure in the 60’s and the old airfield itself sold to Butterly Aggregates who have quarried out most of the old field and broken up the runways for use as hardcore. Indeed, very little remains to indicate the airfields former use.
The old bomb stores to the North of the old airfield are located in forestry commission woodland and still contain the old loading ramps and store huts, which are accessible from Kirby Lane/Moor Lane, though you’ll have to hike through over ½ mile of woods to get to the old bomb store area.
Parts of the old domestic sites to the South of the airfield, built around North Road, still exist but in a very run down state. The old Sergeants Mess in Tattershall Thorpe, next to the B1192, has actually been redeveloped as a wartime museum to the old site.
A memorial to RAF Woodhall is located next to the Museum Entrance, a memorial to the famous 617 Dambusters Squadron can be found next to the crossroads in Woodhall Spa village. If you wish to visit Thorpe Camp museum, checkout their website on my links page. |
