RAF Coningsby is one of the half dozen or so active airfields remaining in Lincolnshire today. The base opened in 1939 as a bomber airfield, but in the late 60’s was redeveloped into a fighter station.

During the 80’s, the base was well known as being the home to the Tornado aircraft and more recently has become home to the new Typhoon Euro-fighter, which has attracted scores of plane spotters to the area.

The base is also famous for being home to the legendary “Battle of Britain Memorial Flight” which boasts one of the last remaining fully flying Lancaster Bomber’s in the world and also includes numerous flying Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft, as well as a Dakota troop carrier.

Being an active RAF station, most of the airifield pictures were taken from outside the base using a zoom lens. The pictures showing the original control tower were taken summer 2005, this has since been demolished and operations moved to the new tower next to it.

The Memorial flight hanger is open to the public at certain times for guided tours, for more information checkout their website on my links section.
