Some 7 miles West of Lincoln, located just on the other side of the Lincolnshire / Nottinghamshire border, immediately South of the village it takes its name from, lie the remains of former RAF Wigsley.
The base opened in 1942 as a bomber airfield, but continued to have an active post war role as a relief landing ground for nearby Swinderby until 1958, when the site was finally decomisioned and sold off.
The airfield is partially dissected by Wigsley Road, which had to be closed during the war years, as it cuts off the top of the main NE-SW runway.
The old control tower, which is unique in that it's of a rare 3-storey design, still stands, albeit in an extremely run-down state. As do other odd buildings and sections of peri-track, though most of the runways have long been churned up and the majority of buildings demolished. Most of the former main airfield is actually now a piggery.
Several domestic site buildings North of site still remain on private farmland, and there are still some remains of the old bomb stores and technical site in Wigsley wood to the North-West, however many of these are now private or commercial properties and so not readily available to photograph.
