Located just inside the Lincolnshire border with Norfolk on the East side of the River Nene accross from the village of Long Sutton, some 5 miles West of Kings Lynn, RAF Sutton Bridge, which takes its name from the nearby river crossing, was a former RAF Fighter station.
The base originally opened up in 1926 as fighter training school and continued in this capacity up until its eventual closure in 1958.
Today very little, if anything, remains to indicate the areas former use. A power station and industrial estate developments now sit on what used to be the old airfield and virtually all the old buildings have been demolished, apart from a couple of huts which could easily be mistaken for old farm buildings.
Bits of the old perimiter track remain, but as newer industrial development slowly take over the site it won't be long before all old traces of the site finally dissapear.
A few houses, which used to form part of the married quarters, still exist. Some of which were still owned by the RAF for use for people working at nearby RAF Holbeach.
A memorial to the old site can be found next to the bridge on the Eastern Side on what would have been the North-West corner of the airfield. |
