Named after the village some 5 miles to the South-West, RAF Holbeach is located next to the marshes of Holbeach St Mathews.
The station opened in 1926 as a bombing and gunnery range and still exists for this purpose today.
The main station is located North of the range, with the control tower and observation posts being some 2 miles South along the Marsh banks.
There is a public footpath along the marsh banks, which provides a good view of the bombing range and makes for interesting viewing when the RAF are out practising. |
