Located 15 miles North of Lincoln, and some 5 miles south of Scunthorpe. RAF Kirton in Lindsey, which was built immediately South of the village from where it takes its name from, originally opened in 1940.
The site was one of the RAF’s expansion period airfields and was actually located close to a former RFC landing ground of the same name, which had closed at the end of WW1.
The site originally opened as a fighter station and was used for this purpose up until 1960, when the MOD decided to transfer its use to the Army. The base was then renamed “Rapier Barracks” and used by the Army’s Royal Artillary Corps.
In 2004, the base was transferred back to RAF use and the name changed back to “RAF Kirton in Lindsey”. The station is currently used by No.1 Air Control Centre (1ACC), the RAF’s only deployable ground-based early warning and air control radar unit, and is administered by nearby RAF Scampton.
Though the RAF no longer use the former airfield for aviation use, some flying does still take place in the form of a private glider club, who now own a chunk of the former airfield. Another chunk of the airfield was turned into a golf course by the army, a function for which it is still used for today. |
