Former RAF Winthorpe is located just over the Lincolnshire county boundary in Nottinghamshire, next to the village of Winthorpe, which is on the North East corner of Newark on Trent.
The site was open between 1940-1959 and many parts of the old airfield still remain. Though sadly, the old control tower was demolished when they re-routed the A17 to go around Newark, which now cuts through the Southern part of the airfield, and many other hangers and buildings have been knocked down over the years.
Most of the runways do still exist, though are dissected by various roads and owing to its close proximity to the A1 and A46, building developments are beginning to encroach on the West side of the site. The main part of the old airfield itself is currently used as Newark Showground. The main East-West runway is used by Newark glider club, and part of the East side is home to Newark Air Museum.
A memorial to the old airfield can be found on the museum site. |
