Market Stainton, located adjacent to the village of the same name approximately 9 miles South-West of Louth, was a munitions dump for the airfields in the Eastern parts of Lincolnshire.
The bombs were simply stored along the grass verges of the main road to the east of the village, which required it to be blocked off from both ends. The bombs were carried to and from the nearby railway station by lorry.
The bomb dump was open between 1943-1948 and the camp itself was built in a nearby field East of the village.
Today, a single hut is all that remains of this once busy site. Even the nearby railway station has closed down. |
