Located South of Strubby Village, aproximately 10 miles South-East of Louth, between the A157 and B1373 roads. RAF Strubby opened late WW2 in 1944, but continued to be an active airfield, operating as a releif landing ground for nearby Manby, up until 1972.
Differant parts of the airfield are in differant ownerships. Most of the old field has reverted to agriculture, though parts of the main runway still exist and are used by a glider club which operates on the old airfield. The old control tower still stands, which was in a dilapedated state up until 2006, but has since been renovated and is now a private dwelling.
All 3 hangers still exist, 2 of which on the former main technical site have been reclad. One of which is used as a farm stores, the other is home to Woodthorpe Aquatic Centre. The third, which is on the North-East side of the field, is in its original condition and used for storing grain.
Most of the original buildings on the technical/admin side still exist, though many are run down, and are used as farm stores.
The perimiter track which runs around the airfield is still intact, part of which is used for go-karting. Part of the Northern peri-track has been renovated and is used today as a private helicopter strip.
Part of the old domestic site still stands on private farmland to the South-West of site, however the farmer does not allow access to these. He did however permit me to take a few long distance shots from his private access road though (many thanks to the owners of wood farm).
Please note that the recent photos of the control tower, now being a private house, were taken only after seeking permission from the home owners. A big thankyou to the gentleman in question. |
