| 10 miles South of Lincoln, West of the A15 road, just South of the village itself on a country road named "Ermine Street" lies former RAF Wellingore.
This grass airfield opened in 1935 and was built on the site of a former WW1 RFC landing ground. The airfield closed in 1945 and reverted almost immediately back to agriculture. Though during the 1950's, a small section of the old airfield was bought back by the MOD and an ROC fall-out monitoring post constructed on it, this closed in 1993 when the ROC was disbanded. Most of the old buildings have long been demolished, but there are still plenty of remains to see. The concrete perimiter track remains, togethor with numerous pillboxes and gun emplacements that encircle it. An old concrete bunker along Ermine street remains, as do some of the old accomodation site buildings on the other side of the field, West of Pottergate rd, though these are now fenced off on private property. A public footpath runs accross part of the airfield, which allowed me access to take most of these photos on my initial visit in 2005. Please note that the Northern section of airfield is very much on private farmland and the photos of this side of the site, which were taken in 2008, were only done so after seeking permission of the farmer, so please do not go barging onto this side of site unless you have permission first. |
