Located adjacent to the village of Monksthorpe about 2.5 miles East of Spilsby itself, some 18 miles North of Boston lies the remains for former RAF Spilsby.
This former bomber aifield was open between 1943-1958, though post-war saw little use and was primarily used as a storage facility and base for the non-flying units at nearby East Kirkby. Today the vast majority of this site has been demolished, including the old tower, and most of the runways have been removed. But many traces still remain.
One hanger survives and is curently used for farm storage. The old ops block is still there, although this is in a very run down state. Some old buildings to the South of the site remain, though several of these too are very run down.
There's a memorial close to where the old control tower once stood on Mill lane, which can be found opposite the junction to School lane. If you're looking to find this site, take the B1195 East of Spilsby and follow the signs for The Heavy Horse centre as this is based on part of the old accomodation site on Sandy Lane. |
