Digby is one of the few active RAF bases remaining in Lincolnshire, located some 10 miles North-East of Sleaford (or 10 miles South-East of Lincoln) between the B1191 and the A15 on what was once Scopwick Heath.
It originally opened in 1918 as a flying training school named "Scopwick Aerodrome" after the adjacent village, but following the onset of WW2 became an active fighter station and was renamed Digby, after the neighbouring village, to avoid confusion with the similarly named RAF Shotwick in Flintshire.
Digby continued as a fighter station and training school until 1954, when it became a "Signals" unit. The grass airfield is still there, but is now home to the many transmitter masts used by the unit. The control tower and two of the hangers were demolished after the war, but one hanger remains on the far side of the field, which is currently used as the station gym.
The old Ops building still remains and was re-opened in 1997 as a museum, having been restored to its original WW2 condition. The museum is open to the general public, but access is limited to specific times. As this is still an active RAF station, pictures inside the camp were limited to the memorial and the museum itself, which is a pity as many of the old WW2 station signs around the camp still remain.
