Located over the county border, about 8 miles East of Nottingham along the A46. RAF Newton, which takes its name from the adjacent village, opened in 1940 as an RAF base, having been built on the site of a pre-war civil airfield.
It originally opened as a bomber airfield, but mid-war became a flight training school and continued in this capacity up until its closure in 2000. During the war, Newton was unique in that it was the only Military airfield in Nottingham with grass runways, and prior to its closure was also the last fully active RAF base in the county.
Today the site is a private industrial estate and the buildings are being converted into offices and storage space, the old control tower still stands and at the time of writing was being renovated into offices. One of the old hangers was actually used by the BBC to film the popular program “Robot Wars” in.
The domestic site on the North of site near the main entrance is now a housing estate, however the domestic site on the East side of the base is in a derelict state, having been extensively vandalised. The old grass airfield on the West side has since reverted to agriculture.
Please note that being a private industrial estate, the site is not readily accessible to the public and security only allow persons in who are on offical buisiness. These pics were obtained only after gaining permission from security.
Pictures of the Eastern domestic site and rear of the tech site were obtained from a public footpath that runs along the North East side of the base. The long shot view of the hanger taken from a field to the North. |
