| Located over the county border adjacent to a stretch of the A46 known as the Fosse Way, just up the road from former RAF Newton, Syerston is the last (semi) active RAF base to be found in neighbouring Nottinghamshire.
Wedged between the A46 and the river Trent about a mile West of the village from where it takes it name, some 6 miles South-West of Newark, Syerston opened in 1940 as a bomber airfield, but post war became a flying training school up until 1971. Today the airfield is used by RAF Cranwell as a glider training school for air-cadets, but apart from this sees no other operational use. The old control tower, a couple of hangers, and a handful of old admin buildings are all that remain. The other buildings on the site were all demolished in 1997. The former domestic site South of the base has been sold off and is now a private housing estate, the old Sergeant’s mess on the opposite side of the A46 is currently derelict. |
