The former Bracebridge Heath aerodrome, located on the Southern outskirts of Lincoln just up the road from nearby RAF Waddington on the A15, was originally built in 1916 as a private airstrip by aircraft manufacturers Robey and Co. But in 1918 the premises were acquired by the RFC who turned it into a military airfield.
The buildings were built adjacent to the A15, with the flying field behind it to the East. Although flying operations ceased after WW1, the technical site was enlarged by the RAF during WW2 for use as a repair shop by nearby Waddington to rebuild its damaged Lancaster bombers.
During WW2 it was quite a common site to see aircraft being towed along the A15 between Waddington and Bracebridge Heath, and the council had to erect special “collapsible” signposts along this stretch of road to prevent them being knocked over by the aircraft wings.
The Bracebridge Heath works closed sometime after WW2 around 1947, but many of the old WW2 buildings still survive and form part of an industrial estate that now occupies the site. |
